A brand-new family friendly exhibition is coming to The Point in Doncaster. The exhibition, which opens on 7th January, is based on the much-loved children’s book, Wow! Said the Owl by Tim Hopgood.

The exhibition has been specially designed by Tim Hopgood and The Young Art Explorers team to appeal to families and especially under five-year olds, with lots of sensory and interactive elements.

In the book, a little owl stays awake during the day for the first time and is amazed by all the colours she sees, ‘Wow! Said the Owl as white fluffy clouds floated across a bright blue sky’.

The exhibition seeks to give children the same sense of wonder and amazement by introducing them to colours and inviting them to be creative by playing with shapes, puppets, costumes and drawing.

Laura Turner from the Young Art Explorers team, who devised the exhibition with illustrator and author Tim Hopgood said: “Wow! Said the Owl is full of lovely illustrations which help to introduce children to the world of colour. We thought it would be wonderful to recreate the book in an exhibition but also to include lots of interaction for children and families.

“We can’t wait to see how little owls and big owls will be ‘Wowed’ by what they find in this exhibition!”

As well as featuring original artwork by Tim Hopgood, the exhibition will also include original artwork produced by children from Sticky Mitts Day Nursery, Waverley Primary School and Cavendish Day Nursery.

The children worked with artist Griselda Goldsbrough to decorate their own large red butterflies, similar to the ones which feature in the book, which will be displayed in the exhibition.

Assistant Director, Helen Jones said: “We are really pleased that the ‘WOW! Said the Owl’ exhibition is coming to Doncaster. It’s colourful and interactive so that young children and families can explore a world of colours, shapes and textures together.

“Children from local nurseries have produced some stunning butterflies and we can’t wait for families to see them displayed within the exhibition.”

The free exhibition will run from 7th January to 7th March 2020 at The Point on South Parade in Doncaster.

Schools, nurseries and childminder groups are very welcome to book free visits. Teachers and EYFS practitioners – come along on Tuesday 7th January from 4.30pm – 6pm to preview the exhibition, pick up free learning resources and find out about other opportunities for you and your little owls!
